It’s August already, and the Bandstand has welcomed large audiences to five major events so far this summer – in spite of the unbelievable amount of rain!

“RISING STARS” saw the training bands provide a wonderful afternoon of brass band music.  That was back in June, when the sun shone…

More recently, “SCARR BRASS FEST” was nearly dry, with everyone raising their umbrellas in unison when the rain briefly fell half-way through the afternoon.  Three fantastic brass bands gave everyone a memorable concert.  A new feature of the afternoon was the provision of afternoon tea – the scones with jam and cream (or is it cream and jam) went down extremely well!

For the other three events so far, we were very grateful for our collection of gazebos, under which audiences gathered for rather soggy, but still great, events:  “SONGS AT THE BANDSTAND” welcomed two lovely community choirs, and The Pantaloons played “THE COMEDY OF ERRORS” in pouring rain to 74 damp but merry audience members.  Most recently, Jenny Wren Productions performed their marvellous “NICHOLAS NICKLEBY” to an appreciative audience.

We still have two fantastic events to go…..26th August sees the  “MUSICAL EXTRAVAGANZA”: the Glevum Big Band comes to Scarr for the first time; song,  jazz and swing from the 40s, 50s and 60s.  This free event also features a bar, tea, cakes and cheese scones, along with ice cream.

Ending the season on 10th September is a wonderful event organised by Lydbrook Band and Wyldwood Arts to celebrate the band’s centenary.  “A FOREST SYMPHONY” will be a mixture of theatre and band music, and should be a magical finale to the summer.  Tickets are £8, with free entry to 16s and under.
